Drainage

When buying a house, keep an eye on the drainage around the house. The soil should slope away from the house and the slab should be visible all around. French drains can help to alleviate a drainage problem and avoid costly damage but if the slope is totally reversed you are looking at some expensive ground works to remedy the situation if at all possible.
